Certified Organic Dairy Farm - NOFA - New York
The thought process that led us to organics was a long one. Quite frankly, while the lure of a higher milk check was intriguing, the hurdles we would have to cross to become certified were quite intimidating. Other aspects, from concern about handling chemicals and worrying that the children would get into something dangerous to learning that former spray truck drivers were having chemotherapy, helped to make up our minds. Safety on the farm comes in many forms. As there are no shortage of dangers, it only seems reasonable to remove the ones we can.
Currently the conventional dairy industry generally encourages the use GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) in crop production along with BST (Bovine Somatotrophin) in milk production. Of course there are pesticides and herbicides advertised to control every pest imaginable. It is easy to get caught up in the trap of thinking that every problem has a chemical solution. We hear more and more lately about potential dangers of using these products in combination.
At Kimvale we have historically adopted new technology that we deemed would work. Organic conversion means we will be looking for technological advances that improve opportunities to farm in harmony with nature rather than fight against it. We feel that this is a safer way to produce food and believe that there are enough consumers that feel the same way to support our efforts.
Although this way is more expensive and the risks are greater, in the end we feel more satisfied producing milk this way. Perhaps there is a bit of nostalgia here but we feel that this can be a viable way to produce milk.
